The thesis
Words get you to band 6. Chunks get you to band 7.
Natives do not assemble sentences word by word. They snap pre-built chunks into place. IELTS examiners reward this as fluency and lexical resource. Word lists hit a ceiling. Chunks break through it.
Real chunks Cool Mate teaches in real video context:
Conversational fluency (Speaking Part 1)
- on the whole
- I'd say
- it depends on
- to be honest
Writing Task 2 essays
- it can be argued that
- a common counterargument is
- on balance, the evidence suggests
Speaking Part 3 long turn
- from my perspective
- I'd have to say
- it's worth noting that
Listening cue phrases (signposting)
- moving on
- having said that
- in other words
Word list approach
Memorize whole, on, the. Hope your brain reassembles them in time on test day. People forget 50% in 24 hours and 80% in a week.
Chunk approach
Learn on the whole as one move, inside a real clip from a real show. Meet it again right before you'd forget. The actor's face anchors the memory.
Same time investment. Very different test result. This is why 5 minutes of Cool Mate beats an hour of word-list grinding.
Every band descriptor, mapped
How chunks pay off in each IELTS skill.
Speaking
Stop freezing on the Part 2 long turn. Chunks are pre-built, so your mouth produces 'from my perspective' or 'I'd have to say' without translating from your native language. Examiners hear fluency. You hear yourself sounding like you've spoken English for years.
Listening
Natives speak at chunk speed: 3 to 4 words per second, often blurred together ('whaddya mean', 'kinda like that'). If you parse word by word, you fall behind on Part 3. Cool Mate trains your ear to grab the chunk, not the words inside it. Real accents (UK, AU, IN, US, CA), real speed, real connected speech.
Writing Task 2
Markers reward lexical resource. The highest-band essays don't show off rare words. They deploy academic chunks like 'it can be argued that', 'a common counterargument is', 'on balance, the evidence suggests'. Cool Mate's academic collections feed you these in the contexts where they actually appear.
Reading
Two wins. First, raw vocabulary breadth for the technical Academic passages. Second, and the bigger one, chunks unlock idiomatic meaning that word-by-word lookup destroys ('by and large', 'in light of', 'for the most part'). You skim faster, infer better, finish on time.
Writing essay correction
Not in scope today. We don't grade your essays. Pair Cool Mate with Cambridge Write & Improve, IELTS Liz model essays, or your tutor for that. Naming alternatives is trust, not weakness.
Find your starting band
Bands map to CEFR. CEFR maps to Cool Mate.
Cool Mate tags every clip and collection with a CEFR level so you start at the right speed. Pick your target band, then practice at the matching CEFR level. Climb from there.
Band 5 to 6
Build the everyday vocabulary and listening pace you need to walk into the test without panicking.
B1Band 6 to 7
Subtitles come off. Conversations move at native speed. This is the band most candidates target.
B2Band 7 to 8
Idioms, register, and the right preposition every time. The band that opens top universities and skilled migration.
C1Band 8 to 9
Native-like nuance. The band most candidates do not need, but the one where Cool Mate keeps paying off after the test.
C2How it works
Built to fight the forgetting curve.
People forget. Fast. 50% of new vocabulary is gone in 24 hours. 80% in a week. Memorization loses every time.
